By Angela Wahome,
If you’re having trouble selecting a gift for your new graduate, we have four unconventional yet excellent ideas for you. Nope – they’re not your usual briefcase, envelope with money, mobile phone. I do have to admit that the mobile phone will probably appeal most to your new graduate; however, they are going to be entering a challenging job market to say the least. These five gift ideas might be just what your graduate needs to gain the edge they need.
Gift #1 A business suit. This will work well for the graduate as it will give them something to wear when going to interviews. For males, select a black, navy, or grey suit with a conservative shirt and tie. Choose something conservative for female graduates too. You may choose a trendy blouse for an updated look. Try to keep it neat and simple, you don’t want them to be remembered as the one in the hot pink suit with the lime green shoes and matching accessories.
Gift #2 Any graduate will benefit from a well written CV. If it gets them an interview, that would be a plus. The CV is a marketing tool, which is one of the most effective ways for them to showcase their knowledge, strengths, abilities, practical experience, and accomplishments. Without a well written cover letter and CV, they may not have the opportunity to stand out form the rest of the competition. A CV is best left up to professional CV writers. At Corporate Staffing we will be able to assist with this task as we have experience in writing professional CVs specifically suited to the candidate’s needs and objectives.
Gift #3Another terrific gift is learning business etiquette and communication skills. This is a perfect gift to help make the transition from college life to working life. There are several organizations in the Nairobi area that offer these services. These trainers will work with your graduate on appropriate behavior in social settings, networking, and public speaking. The coach will tailor these sessions to your graduate’s personal style and needs.
Gift #4 Negotiating the job market can be a very daunting task for a new graduate. A professional Career Guidance session. This is a terrific way to enable your graduate to identify personal strengths, map out a comprehensive career plan and set challenging career goals focused on personal and professional aspirations. We will work with your graduate to map out the transition from school to work and help them make well-informed career decisions.
Granted, these gifts are probably not at the top of your graduate’s list. However, choosing one or two of these items will give them an edge over the competition.
