The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) is a State Corporation which was established in November 2004 following the enactment of the Persons with Disability Act, 2003 to formulate and implement policies that are geared towards mainstreaming Persons with Disabilities to the national economy and to create an enabling environment in which Persons with Disabilities can operate effectively and efficiently in order to contribute positively to the national economy.

PRINCIPAL PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATION OFFICER

1 Position
Job Group ‘N’

The Principal Public Relations and Communications Officer will provide a broad range of communications and marketing support to the organization.

The position reports to the Director.

The duties and responsibilities are related to the following key areas:

Strategic Communications Planning, Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Working with the Director and senior management team:
  • Lead the planning of the Council communication strategies
  • Lead the monitoring and reporting of all the organization’s internal and external communications activities
  • Direct the Council’s publicity programmes to the various stakeholder groups and audiences
  • Provide advice to the Director on the communications response to issues
  • Develop and ensure adherence to the key messages of the Council and its various initiatives
  • Coordinate communications projects with vendors and contractors

Public and Media Relations:

  • Lead the development and implementation of public awareness of the Council’s activities / programs as well as the issues of persons with disabilities through various public awareness and mass media initiatives
  • Organize and manage press conferences
  • Respond to incoming media calls
  • Determine the strategic focus, research, write/edit articles, newsletters, reports, journals and other public materials
  • Determine the content and maintain the Council’s website ensuring that its updated and remains relevant

Partner and Stakeholder Relations:

  • Lead the development and creation of all outbound stakeholder (disability fraternity, board and client) communications including all promotional materials (provide writing and editing support these materials)
  • Collaborate with stakeholders throughout the disability fraternity to ensure the success of various communications activities

Marketing

  • Review and edit existing promotional materials for marketing effectiveness and adherence to brand guidelines.
  • Coordinate the placement of marketing materials in national and local media
  • Develop and coordinate new marketing initiatives that promote NCPWD and inspire greater access and inclusion for persons with disabilities

Event Planning and Implementation:

  • Lead the coordination of special events such as press conferences, conferences, National Ability Awards celebration, tradeshows and activities associated with International Days such as the International Day for Persons with Disabilities
  • Draft event plans, presentation materials, scripts, speeches and associated collateral material for events, conferences and other special events

Team building and staff supervision:

  • Work collaboratively with a diverse staff team to create and manage cross-organizational, integrated communications strategies
  • Participate in working groups to plan, coordinate and execute original communications products and publications related to special events and programs
  • Oversee a small communications team and mentor members of the communications/PR team to achieve success

Requirements for Appointment

  • A Degree in Communication/Journalism/Public Relations/International Relations
  • Post-graduate Diploma in Communication/ Journalism/ Public Relations/International Relations
  • Served as a Public Relations/Communication officer II for at least four (4) years;
  • Member of Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK);
  • Attended a management course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;
  • Masters degree in the relevant field will be an added advantage
  • Demonstrated outstanding professional competence as reflected in work performance and results.
  • Computer Application skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and good interpersonal relations; and
  • Ability to write, edit and produce a variety of communication materials for release to media and other stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills;

Terms of Service: permanent and pensionable

Salary: Kshs. 40,835 – 42,877 – 45,021 – 47,272 – 49,636 p.m

Allowances:

  • House allowance: Kshs. 24, 000/= p.m
  • Commuter allowance: Kshs. 8,000/= p.m
  • Leave Entitlement kshs. 6,000 /= p.a

Person specification
To be successful in this role, you will have significant experience-based skills in planning, securing and managing funds from institutional donors such as EU, ECHO, DFID, OFDA, and UN agencies and sound understanding of institutional and government donors, funding policies and NGO programming in emergencies and/or development environments.

It is essential to have strong technical knowledge of donor funding proposals and log frames in thematic area.

Experience of capacity building in relation to fundraising or programme development is essential.

You will be self-motivated, target driven and an entrepreneurial approach to exploiting fundraising opportunities.

You will be required to have excellent communication and team working skills.

The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is the leading international conservation organization focused solely on the African continent. AWF’s mission is, together with the people of Africa, to ensure that the wildlife and wild lands of Africa will endure forever.

AWF currently seeks to hire a Heartland Ecologist to be based in its Kilimanjaro Heartland Offices in Namanga who will be responsible for all conservation science in the heartland.

Reporting to the Kilimanjaro Heartland Director with matrix reporting to the AWF Chief Scientist, the Heartland Ecologist will be incharge of design, data collection, collation, storage, analyses and dissemination of information in ecological monitoring, integrated land-use zoning, climate change and applied species research and conservation in the Kilimanjaro Heartland.

S/he has an obligation to participate in fund-raising, policy, sharing knowledge about AWF work, managing program, partnerships, mentoring, monitoring and evaluation of ecological work embedded in the heartland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for all priority ecological monitoring in the AWF Heartland.
  • Provide monthly briefings/ updates on species related activities.
  • Ensure ecological data and information feeds into the integrated land use zoning on the AWF Heartland.
  • Undertake species conservation action in the AWF Heartland.
  • Ensure climate change science integration into the Heartland program.
  • Represent AWF in strategic forums.
  • Postgraduate (MSc. or PhD degree) in relevant field.
  • At least 3 years post degree experience in the sector – any relevant area of ecology acceptable.
  • Direct experience of conservation or field ecological work in Africa.
  • Experience engaging partners and other stakeholder consultation in project development.
  • Experience working under organizational and site-level strategies as member of teams.
  • Demonstrable commitment to AWF mission and understanding of issues faced by AWF in delivering its mission.
  • Have verified record participating in design, managing resources and running a project.
  • Participant in several forums and published at least one peer-reviewed paper.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of ecological and human issues relevant to AWF’s Heartlands Program approach.
  • Has acceptable level of knowledge of local laws and regulations governing research and other ecological mwork in the country.
