INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) TECHNICIAN

The Responsibilities:

  • He/she will be based in Kenya with frequent travelling to Somalia for providing IT/Technical support to the divers offices in Somalia;
  • Provide support by assisting computer users on a day today basis;
  • Ensure proper functioning of computers, printers and the network environment;
  • Assist in the introduction of computer technologies and ensure error free standard software and hardware installation and configuration on workstations according to ICRC policy;
  • Install and maintain the telephone network system;
  • Install and maintain connectivity devices on ICRC LAN’s;
  • Train, support and advise computer, radio and telephone users in the region;
  • Administer and maintain IT inventory;
  • Plan, install, maintain and repair all the radio communication systems (i.e. Mobile & fixed radio installations, repeaters, operational radio room)

The Requirements:

  • Kenyan residence and holding a valid National passport;
  • Degree or Diploma in Information Technology;
  • Professional certification in a Network Operating System or Software Development;
  • Good knowledge of computer culture, utilities, printers and peripherals;
  • Experience in HF & VHF radio installations, VSAT and Satellite technologies;
  • At least three years experience in Network Administration;
  • Good knowledge of English and Somali language;
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel in Somalia and to spend short-medium periods in the field.

The Profile:
ICRC is looking for young and energetic individuals who have good organisational, interpersonal and communication skills. The successful candidates should have a sense of analysis and initiative, the ability to work independently and in a team. The above position demand flexibility and the ability to work under pressure in difficult context. Weekly trip to Mogadishu (Somalia) and other parts of Somalia on request.

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

The position
The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) seeks to recruit a Kenyan national as a Research Technician. The position will be based at KARI-Katumani, Stem borer Mass Rearing Laboratory (Insectary), Machakos, Kenya.

Specific responsibilities

  • Artificially rear different species of maize stem borers (Chilo partellus, Busseola fusca, Sesamia calamisstis, and Eldana Saccharina) pests
  • Plan seasonal insect supplies in collaboration with CIMMYT and KARI scientists
  • Plan and procure necessary diets ingredients and lab consumables
  • Consistently supply the stem borers in required quantities, and qualities in a timely manner
  • Run the insectary units and under the supervision of the Manager of the KARI Katumani Mass Rearing Laboratory
  • Together with the CIMMYT entomologist, carry out gene infusion with fresh wild stem borer colonies.
  • Keep records of insect supplies
  • Keep records of insect sales and lab consumables, labour and other important occurrences in the lab.
  • When needed carry out artificial infestation of stem borers in field trials
  • Train and/or demonstrate stem borer rearing facilities to trainees, visiting scientists, graduate students, etc.

Requirements

  • At least a diploma in Applied Biology, Crop Production and Protection, Agriculture or related fields. A degree in any of the fields will be an advantage.
  • At least one year experience in stem borer mass rearing
  • Experience in field infestation with stem borers
  • Ability to effectively work with minimum supervision
  • Willingness to work during weekends as well as monitoring the insectary at odd hours when needed.
  • Proven computing skills. Experience in use of statistical analysis software for data analysis will be an advantage.
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • A Kenyan citizen with a valid Kenya driver’s license
  • Practical experience in field experimental layout will be an added advantage.

  • Provide technical support to the users and “non-core application users” on the campus by diagnoses and resolution of ICT problems.
  • Take over the resolution of problems that have been escalated by the “power users” and have them resolved within the assigned timeframe.
  • Lead ICT projects that are implemented by the ICT Support team, including the roll-out of new applications and equipment.
  • Provide the link between ICT Support Services and the Infrastructure team to ensure that essential tasks are carried out and do not fall between the two teams.
  • Keep the helpdesk status for requests up-to-date, attempt to resolve the problem as soon as possible but definitely within the timeframe set by the priority level and close the call as soon as the problem has been resolved to the satisfaction of the customer.
  • Supervise students that are on attachment to the ICT Unit.
  • Monitor the implementation of policies, procedures and standards on the campus and make the necessary corrections where necessary.
  • Identify commonly recurring requests for assistance and provide advice on how these can be prevented or minimised, through training, user awareness, changes in configuration etc.
